I’m Derek Meng, a Chemistry PhD graduate from McGill University with expertise in chemical synthesis, cheminformatics, and environmental emergency response. I currently work as a Patent Examiner at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, leveraging my scientific and legal skills to evaluate innovative technologies. With a strong background in organic chemistry, research, mentorship, and scienctific communication, I’m passionate about advancing science through research, teaching, and intellectual property.

Background

After earning my Honours Bachelor of Science in Biopharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Ottawa, I completed a PhD in Chemistry at McGill University. I am passionate about translating scientific research into real-world applications, bridging the gap between academic discovery and practical innovation.

Where I Apply My Expertise

I began my career in environmental emergency response, specializing in HAZMAT incidents where I leveraged my scientific background to guide evidence-based decision-making during critical situations. Building on this foundation, I now work as a patent examiner where I apply my scientific expertise to critically evaluate emerging technologies, facilitating the advancement of innovations with real-world impact.
